Why Is My Crypto Transaction Stuck for Hours – and Who's to Blame?

You sent cryptocurrency. Ten minutes passed. Then half an hour. An hour. And the recipient’s wallet is still empty.

Sound familiar?

This happens to everyone who’s used crypto long enough. And every time, you want to know: whose fault is it, and what should you do?

I’ll break down four popular networks: Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT (in its various wrappers), and Monero. Each has its own reasons for slowing down.

Bitcoin: A Queue and an Auction

Bitcoin works like a giant queue. Everyone who wants to send a transaction lines up. Miners approach this queue and choose who to process first.

Who do they choose? Whoever offers the highest fee.

It’s an auction. You’re not paying for the fact of the transfer — you’re paying for your place in line.

If you set a fee of 1 satoshi per byte, while the network’s average fee at that moment is 50 satoshis per byte, your transaction could hang for a full day. Or even bounce back to your wallet after two weeks without ever confirming.
Why Bitcoin slows down most often:

  • The block is full. About 3,000 transactions fit into one block. If people send more than that, a jam forms.
  • You didn’t check the mempool before sending. The mempool is a waiting room. When it has 200,000 transactions in it, even an average fee will move slowly.
  • Your wallet automatically set too low a fee. Some older wallets don’t calculate the current price well.

What to do:
Go to mempool.space. The colored bars there show how congested the network is. If the bars are tall and red, don’t send Bitcoin with a low fee. Wait a couple of hours for the network to calm down.
If your transaction is already stuck, some wallets let you speed it up via rеplace-by-Fee. You send the same transaction again, but with a higher fee. The old one gets canceled, and the new one goes through faster.
 

Ethereum: Gas and Smart Contract Complexity

The situation with Ethereum is similar, but with a nuance. Here the fee is called gas. And it depends not only on network congestion, but also on what you’re doing.

A simple ETH transfer from one wallet to another is cheap. But if you’re sending USDT (which is a smart contract), the transaction becomes more complex and requires more gas. The same goes for swapping on Uniswap or interacting with any DeFi app.
Why Ethereum slows down most often:

  • Gas auction. Same as Bitcoin, but bids are made in gwei per unit of gas instead of satoshis per byte.
  • Complex transactions. You might pay $20 in fees for a USDT transfer not because the network is congested, but because the token itself requires more computation.
  • The wallet didn’t warn you. You sent a transaction at 20 gwei, while the going rate on the network at that moment was 50 gwei. Your transaction is stuck, but the wallet shows “sent.”

What to do:
Before sending, check etherscan.io. It has a gas tracker. It shows which price goes through fast and which goes through slowly.

If your transaction is already stuck, some wallets let you raise the gas via a speed up function. You pay extra, and the transaction gets priority.
Another option: if a transaction isn’t confirming for hours, you can cancel it by sending a zero-value transaction to your own address with the same nonce and a higher gas fee. But this is for people who understand what they’re doing.
 

USDT: It All Depends on the Network

USDT is a token that lives on different blockchains. Speed and fees depend entirely on which network you chose.

USDT on Tron (TRC20). Delays here are almost unheard of. Tron is designed for cheap, fast transfers. The fee is around $1-2, and the transaction goes through in 1-3 minutes. Even during peak hours.

USDT on BSC (BEP20). Also fast and cheap. BSC handles load well. The only issue was back in 2021, when the network froze up due to a coin scam. It’s stable now.

USDT on Ethereum (ERC20). This is where the problems start. Same gas auction as with regular ETH. But the fee is higher because USDT is a complex contract. During peak hours, a transfer can cost $5-10 and take an hour.

USDT on Solana. The network is very fast and cheap. Problems are rare, but they happen. Solana has stopped completely several times due to overload. If you sent USDT a minute before such a stoppage, your transaction will hang until the network resumes.

USDT on TON. A new network. So far it’s fast and cheap. It hasn’t yet faced the kind of load that would cause a jam.
Why USDT slows down most often:

  • You chose the wrong network. If you need speed, use TRC20 or BEP20. Only use ERC20 if there’s no other option.
  • The network is overloaded. Even Tron has rare lags when some popular token launches at the same time.
  • Your wallet set a low fee. On networks like Ethereum, this is critical.

What to do:
Before sending, check the fee your wallet is offering. If it’s much lower than average, raise it manually.
Use TRC20 or BEP20 for regular transfers. Save ERC20 for cases when the recipient only accepts that network.
 

Monero: Privacy Has a Price

Monero stands apart. Its transactions are private. That means they’re larger in size and harder to verify.
Why Monero slows down most often:

  • Transaction size. A regular Monero transfer takes up several kilobytes, while a Bitcoin transaction is around 250 bytes. More data takes longer to process.
  • Verification complexity. A miner needs to perform more computations to confirm the transaction is valid.
  • Low fee. Monero also has priority levels. If you set the fee to the minimum, the transaction could wait several hours.

What to do:
Don’t set the minimum fee if you need speed. In Monero, the price difference between a regular and a high fee is small, but the time difference can be significant.
Keep an eye on the Monero mempool on sites like mempool.xmr.is. If a lot of transactions have piled up there, it’s better to wait.

The Bottom Line

It’s not the exchanger’s fault, and it’s not the exchange’s fault. It’s network congestion and your fee.

Each network runs by its own rules. Bitcoin and Ethereum are auctions — whoever pays more gets through faster. Tron and BSC are built for speed. Solana is fast but sometimes goes down. Monero slows down because of privacy.

Before sending, always check network congestion. For BTC and ETH, there are explorers with mempool data. For USDT, choose TRC20 or BEP20 if speed matters to you. Don’t set the minimum fee when you’re counting minutes.

And remember: if a transaction has been stuck for a full day, it’s not lost. It’s just waiting. On most networks, it will either go through eventually or bounce back to your wallet after a few days. The money doesn’t disappear. But your nerves take a hit.
